There are many variants of billiards, but the most common billiards game is eight-ball, a pocket billiards game invented in the U.S. around the start of the 20th century. BILLIARD RULES AND HISTORY:

Originally, this billiards game was played with seven red and seven yellow balls, plus a black ball and the cue ball. Now 8-ball billiards is generally more colorful, with numbered billiard balls and many regional and international rule variations. If your billiard challenger speaks with a strange accent, you may want to clarify the rules of your game before starting to play!

Common differences affect slop shots (the unintentional pocketing of billiard balls), fouls, and whether a billiard player can win the game instantly by sinking the 8-ball on the break. You should also know that the official starting rack rules in this billiard game require that the 8-ball be at the center and balls of different suits be positioned at the two corners farthest from the cue ball.
